Day 5: Brantôme and Bourdeilles

Friday is market day In Brantôme, so we spent the morning shopping and gathering supplies for dinner. We enjoyed lunch along the river and managed to take pictures of our food before devouring it.

In the afternoon we returned to Bourdeilles, and Charlotte met another cat.

 I made a tomato  gâlette for dinner, and later on we wandered up to the new restaurant at the top of the hill for a digestif and some live music!

Meanwhile, we’ve been washing the pile of textiles we discovered in the “new” house (abandoned since ~1965). Here’s one example (most are not so interesting!):

Day 10: The Louvre and shopping

We did a “highlights” tour of the Louvre this morning (thanks to Rick Steeves).  Sketching was done.  Some of us were relaxed.  Photos were taken.  We did *not* wait in this line to get up close to the Mona Lisa.  Charlotte refused to re-enact Les Mis with me.  After the museum, we visited E. Dehillerin but did * not* buy a full set of copper pans.  Or a ladle as big as Charlotte’s head.  And we made a stop at the cutest yarn shop ever.  And finally, lunch.  After that, a swing through Galeries Lafayette — so fancy! And we took the Metro back to our hotel for some air conditioning. Did I mention that it was well into the 90s today? Whew! We all got a little rest in the air conditioning, and then had a most delightful dinner at Le Petit Prince near our hotel. Charlotte’s dessert unfortunately caught fire.  We fly home tomorrow. What a trip we’ve had!

Day 4: Lascaux & shopping & dinner, oh my!

We toured the replica caves at Lascaux this morning, but I didn’t get much in the way of photos. The tour and visitor center were great — organized, informative, and lovely.  We did not buy any overpriced Lascaux liqueurs.  On our way back we stopped for a few things at Auchon (somewhere between Walmart and Target on the big box store spectrum) and happened upon these in the t-shirt section: Back at the house, we had a little aperitif with neighbors before heading up to dinner.  The restaurant just up at the top of the hill has new owners and a wonderfully eclectic menu. My starter was a goat cheese burrata with a tomato tapenade.  My main was less picturesque (still delicious!), and my dessert was an apricot “soup.” Yum.  Tomorrow, the market in Brantôme!
